Whitebird Canyon Hills - Block Captain meetings to get the word outFrom: CAP Views [CAPViews@comcast.net] Sent: Sunday, November 09, 2003 12:28 PM To: Canyon Area Preservation - 2 Whitebird Alert! Subject: Whitebird Canyon Hills - Block Captain meetings to get the wordout Hello Fellow Activists and Interested Block Captains,

BLOCK CAPTAIN MEETINGS 7PM to 8:30PM:
Monday November 10
Monday November 24 (this is the correct date, not Nov. 17 as I said earlier)
Monday December 8

Julianne Maurseth’s house: 7217 Tranquil Place, Tujunga (see details below)
RSVP to jem@awakeatwork.com or call me at 818-352-5818

Over 30 days has passed since the Planning Department released the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) on the Whitebird Canyon Hills Project. There are less than 60 days for you to learn about this project, decide how you want to respond, and TAKE ACTION.

There are over 65,000 people living in the Sunland-Tujunga-Lake View Terrace–Shadow Hills-La Tuna Canyon area. One day next year, most of those people will drive down the 210 Freeway or La Tuna Canyon Road and see the land being cleared by bulldozers, earth graders, and blasting crews – and they will ask, what’s going on here? Who let this happen??

Our goal here at Canyon Area Preservation is to get the word out about Canyon Hills BEFORE it gets approved so as many people as possible can let their voice be heard by Councilmember Wendy Greuel, the Planning Department, the full City Council, and Mayor Hahn – and by the owners of Whitebird, Inc. (located somewhere in Nevada or Texas, we’re not quite sure).

We don’t have the money to buy the mailing lists and pay for postage to let people know about this project. We are relying on grass roots efforts to get the word out. That’s why it is so important for you who receive these bulletins to take personal responsibility to inform your neighbors.

Canyon Area Preservation, Glendale-Crescenta V.O.I.C.E., and the Sierra Club are offering the only information about this project that does not come from the developer or its public relations agency!

Here’s an easy way for you to help:

Come to our Block Captain meetings on Monday evenings November 10th, November 24th (correct date, not Nov. 17th as I said earlier), and December 8th from 7:00PM to 8:30PM.

The Agenda for the first meeting of the Block Captains tomorrow night (11/10) includes:

1) Welcome & introductions
2) Overview of why we’re here
3) Orientation to their Role & Responsibilities as Block Captains
4) Overview of the Canyon Hills Project and implications
5) Overview of the DEIR process, stages and deadlines
6) Discuss what is involved in responding to a DEIR (e.g., clarify “citizen experts”, dedicated focus on sections, etc.)
6) Review of Guidelines for how they can best educate their neighbors
7) Goals to complete before the next meeting on 11/24
8) Discuss support, contacts and resources available to help them (our Core Team, web sites, etc)
9) Final Questions & Closing

We will meet from 7:00-8:30 p.m., and stay on time. If people want more time, that’s fine, but those who don’t have it can leave at 8:30 p.m.. We are providing each Block Captain with a folder of specific materials to assist them in their outreach. Many of these materials will be useful for any individual who wants to respond to the DEIR, and we can make these available. At our meetings on 11/24 and 12/8, the Agendas will primarily focus on specific education about the DEIR response, Block Captains’ updates on outreach and commitments from neighbors to respond, and their Q&A.

Julianne Maurseth is kind enough to host the meeting in her lovely canyon home in Tujunga. It’s hard to find, but worth the search to come to the meeting:

From Foothill Boulevard near Commerce Avenue, look for Hillhaven Avenue and go south (it’s between a motel and the old Ford dealership). As the road goes up the hill there’s an intersection, take that street to the right, it’s still Hillhaven (if you come to the “T” intersection of Estepa Drive you’ve gone too far). At the next “T” intersection, turn left. It’s still Hillhaven. You’ll come to another intersection of 3 streets, take the second right. It’s still Hillhaven. Go down the hill to the next street, Tranquil Place, and turn left. The house is at the end of the street on the left (it’s very rural down there!).

Hope you can make it! We really could use your help. Thanks.
