Haines Canyon Channel Outlet Maintenance Meeting on 8/31/06
Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council

The L.A. County Department of Public Works will hold a special meeting regarding the Haines Canyon Channel Outlet Maintenance in Sunland. This is an area at the end of Tujunga Valley Street residences and adjacent to the Angeles Golf Course and the Tujunga Wash. After several inquiries, a meeting has been arranged by the offices of Councilmember Wendy Greuel and Supervisor Mike Antonovich. Representatives from LA County Public Works will discuss the project at the following community meeting:

Thursday, August 31st, 2006
7:00 PM
Sunland Senior Center
8640 Fenwick Street
Sunland, CA 91040

We encourage your attendance and participation at this meeting so you can obtain more information and ask questions. Save the date for Thursday, August 31 at 7 p.m.

Following is an excerpt (page 3-2) from the Initial Study and Mitigated Negative Declaration dated June 2006 (a copy of this entire document is available at the STNC office if you would like to see it):

"Environmental Checklist Form, Item 7 - Description of project: The Haines Canyon Channel Outlet Maintenance project proposes to reconfigure the primary drainage within the CLADPW ROW by removing accumulated sediment, and possibly trees, that are impeding the preferred flow of water; regrading the soft-bottom channel; and filling in the pond area. The purpose of the project is to alleviate the standing water and restore the functionality of the flood control channel. The proposed project would also ameliorate the public safety hazard related to the potential for stagnant water to be a vector for mosquitoes, which can carry West Nile Virus. This scope of work is beyond the intensity of annual maintenance activities which the CLADPW is currently permitted to complete at this site. Therefore, CLADPW requires a modification to the existing Streambed Alteration Agreement (SAA), and the process of applying for a new or modified SAA (currently underway) requires a completed CEQA document."
