Fire!: Evac Was There
By Tama Lockwood

At 4:15 am. December 15, a call came in from Barbara Thompson of the J Bar ranch at the east end of Lake View Terrace, that a brushfire above them was threatening their property. They board at least 80 horses there below Oliver Canyon and might need help to evacuate them.

Calling as many people as I could think of for help, I hooked up my trailer and drove to Esco and Jiminez, where Terry Kaiser and another rig were parked, later joined by members of the San Fernando Rangers, Robert McCall and his dad, Larry McCall. Other Rangers that came were Terry Olson, Jon Burke, Matt and Connie Langseth and Mike McCullough. Thanks!

A few of us walked up to the ranch and were on stand-by for about 1 1/4 hours, when the fire was declared contained. Fortunately, the wind had died down and crews were on hand to patrol the burn for hot spots.

Thanks to all those willing to help--David Riniker, Nancy Berns, Carol Roper, Linda and Mike Fullerton, Ray Holmgren, Randy Kershaw, and "Appy" Jack who offered the loan of his rig.

Unfortunately, Animal Reg. could not be reached and showed up as I was leaving. Evac came through but EERT and Animal Reg. could not be reached for lack of correct phone numbers (that has been rectified). Even though we weren't needed, it's better to be there and not be needed than to be needed and not be there.

A number of people who were willing and able to help were not allowed in, even on foot. But 5 or 6 Media trucks were allowed in!
