The Hoof Beat September 2003

Part 1. What’s Growing in Your Pasture or on the Trails?

Lake View Terrace--After reading several articles on toxic plants, Tama Lockwood, the VHOA EVAC and Trails Director, took to the trails with her camera to see what she could easily find in the Lake View Terrace area.

There are three areas you need to be on the look out for toxic plants: in the pasture, around the yard where the horse may make univited visits, and on the trails. Many decorative plants used in gardening are not healthy for your horse such as azaleas. Sometimes the fruit of a plant is editable, but the foliage is toxic like black cherry trees.
