Stonehurst--The historic Stonehurst neighborhood with its rock houses and horses celebrated the dedication of the first multi-use, neighborhood park equestrian facility to ever be built at a City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks facility. The dedication ceremony on August 7th was hosted by 2nd District City Councilmember Wendy Greuel, Recs & Parks General Manager Jon Kirk Mukri, and Stonehurst Park Director Andy Kasdin.
The list of community leaders and residents who supported the equestrian facility stretches back over the years Stonehurst and Shadow Hills residents worked to have the arena included in the improvements at the Stonehurst Recreation Center. The arena has been a constant thread of conversation and hope at meetings of the Park Advisory Board, Neighborhood Watch, Corral 20, Valley Horse Owners Association, Foothill Trials Neighborhood Council, and Shadow Hills Property Owners Association.
The $200,000 arena and trail addition to the Park finally became a reality under the guidance of Councilmember Greuel and her assistant Pat Davenport. Stonehurst Recreation Center is the only location in the area offering free horseback riding lessons for youth. Funding for the project came from Propositions 12 and K, as well as developer fees. The programs Recs & Parks will be able to offer as result of having the arena is fitting for this historic equestrian neighborhood which dates back to the 1920’s
