The Hoof Beat October 2004

Final Environmental Impact Report
By Steve Crouch, Canyon Area Preservation

The Final Environmental Impact Report on the Whitebird Canyon Hills proposed development was released in early September 2004. This extensive document shows in detail what they are planning to do and, along with the Draft EIR released earlier, will form the basis by which the Planning Department decides to approve the project or send it back for revision.

The Final EIR includes detailed responses to nearly 200 comment letters received after the release of the DEIR last October. Did you write a letter at that time? If you did, thank you. Under law, the developer and Planning Department have responded individually to each letter they received, and those responses are included in the Final EIR.

Everyone should read the final document to see how whitebird and the planning department glossed over nearly every substantive issue. Whether you wrote a letter or not, please read just some of the responses to get a sense of how your input and concerns were dealt with (or not!).

You can see the Final EIR on line at http://cityplanning.lacity.org/, select "Environmental" on the left menu list, then "Final Environmental Impact Report". Canyon Hills is the first one you’ll see.

You can also request a copy on CD, view the printed document at the Municipal Building (7747 Foothill Blvd, Tujunga, CA 91042), ask to see it at the library, or ask your Neighborhood Council how to obtain a copy. Contact me if you want to get a CD.

As a community, we need to continue to respond to this proposal. PLEASE WRITE A COMMENT LETTER immediately and send it in. You can continue to provide your input all the way through this process, but it will be most effective to send in another letter before the end of October. There will be a meeting of the Deputy Advisory Agency in late November or early December that will consider the subdivision application, and if it passes this step it will go on to the full Planning Commission on its way to the City Council for final approval.

Here’s the address to send your letter. Please get me a copy of what you send so we can keep track of what’s going on. Please be factual in what you write.
