Critical Vote for Sunland, Tujunga, and La Tuna Canyon

On Thursday, February 24th, the Planning Commission of the City of Los Angeles will take a critical vote that will affect the future of residents in Sunland, Tujunga, La Tuna Canyon, and Shadow Hills for the next fifty years. At 10 a.m., in the Conference Room of the Marvin Braude Building at 6262 Van Nuys Boulevard in Van Nuys, the Commssion will hear final testimony from attorneys, environmental groups, and local residents on the Canyon Hills project.

Canyon Hills is a proposed 280-unit housing development on 194 acres on both sides of the 210 freeway west of La Tuna Canyon Road. The Commission is considering changes in zoning and the City’s General Plan to allow 230 of the 280 units to be built on the 900 acre site. The decision to allow 230 units is being appealed by F.A.L.C.O.N., a coalition of local organizations including Canyon Area Preservation, Glendale-Crescenta V.O.I.C.E., the Sierra Club, the La Tuna Canyon Property Owners Association, and the Valley Horse Owners Association. The Shadow Hills Property Owners Association and the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy are also appealing the decision. While not part of the appeal, the Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council passed a resolution opposing the project last November.

The public is invited to attend and make their feelings about the project known to the Commission. Even if a member of the public does not wish to speak, their presence at the hearing will send a strong statement to the Commissioners.
