Cuyamaca State Park
Letter to the Union Tribute January 18th
The efforts to move the horse camp at Cuyamaca State Park would seem to be of interest to only horseback riders. However, if archeological interests are allowed to close or move this camp, a dangerous precedence is being set in motion for all facilities, campgrounds and trails in all the state parks of California. After any natural occurrence in the state, all facilities would be at risk with potentially dire consequences for recreation.
This camp has been in continuous use for more than 50 years, the archeological site is intact, the grasses have regrown. No violations of the site have occurred, quite the contrary, the site has been preserved by the folks who have camped there.
Recreation interests, all of us who seek to hike, ride, bike, climb, swim, camp, meditate in a state park have had no representation in the process underway. Hopefully one day there could be a Recreational Commission representing the users of state parks. The Dyar family donated the land which is now Cuyamaca Rancho State Park for the use of the people, specifically equestrians. Please urge your state representatives to re-open Los Caballos horse camp; our voices could make a difference.
